New home sales up 4.3 per cent in March 2011

For the third consecutive month, the number of new homes sold across Australia has increased. This appears to have been pushed up by solid gains in detached house sales in March.
The latest HIA Hew Home Sales report shows that the number of new homes sold increased by 4.3 per cent in March, following on from a 0.6 per cent rise in February. Of this, detacted house sales rose by 5.8 percent in the month, while multi-unit sales dropped by 10 per cent. This was flagged as a concern by HIA.
HIA chief economist Harley Dale welcomed the results, but said there was still a long way to go for new home sales to reach healthy levels.
